Great while it lasted
7 Nov 2009
By Squueezebox , Kent
"I can only agree with all the positive things that have been said about this splitter. It really does make life easy (easier). We happily split loads of logs last season (we rely on wood for all our heat). However, its first outing this season saw it break, leaving the point embedded in the log. But it is testament to usefulness of this product that I am buying another one. Mind you, if this one breaks, I shall be banging the door down for a refund."

Remarkable Tool !!
6 Oct 2009
By Nogger , Leicestershire
"This tool is fantastic to say the least. To look at it you would think it wouldnt do the job.Believe me you would be very wrong. It will split large Logs with no trouble. When it comes to hard work, its only a matter of driving it into the log with a heavy hammer. Im quite amazed and for the price well its the best thing for the money ive ever bought. I also read the reviews on it and thought they were over the top. They were not. So get out there and buy one and see for yourself, you wont regret it- trust me."

Excellent value tool
19 Mar 2009
By Hockeyman , Bude
"Excellent tool for splitting wood, wet or dry. I bought mine together with a Roughneck maul, and between the two of them splitting logs is easy. Have used it on recently felled sycamore and it drives through with no problems."

A no-brainer
11 Feb 2009
By Slave , Lancaster
"I am now splitting those really tricky slices of trunk which were once intersections of large branches. I often use it in conjunction with a splitting maul to great effect. If you're thinking of buying one, buy two instead!"

Some woods are easy...
31 Jan 2009
By BashOn , Linlithgow
"Watch out for contorted grain:
1. Where the trunk branches
2. In tortuous woods like apple

Most wood can be split fairly easily with an 8lb maul (screwfix no longer seem to sell these!) and a bit of technique.

The wood grenade helps when life gets a bit harder. You can really mash it as hard as you like with the back or the maul, or a club hammer. I recommed safety glasses, and ear defenders in that case, as the noise is concussive! Keep people away, especially children, as the wood can fly about a bit. Also watch out for the head of the grenade mushrooming. Like a bolster, that's the time to replace it.

I would recommed buying a second one; it is possible in really tough woods (like apple at a trunk split) to completely bury the grenade with no splitting (even in very short bits, maybe 12" long).

Very satisfying to use, and much cheaper than traditional twisted steel wedges!

Brilliant splitting tool
10 Jan 2009
By TheJollyRodger , Stirling
"This is well worth the money. Tough and simple to use and splits big hard logs even with knots. You don't even need a heavy maul to drive it into the wood. A great piece of kit, highly recommended."

Great bit of kit!
17 Dec 2008
By Trainspotter , Rugby
"The hardest part is swinging the hammer - the tool does the rest. Just when you think your getting nowhere - CRACK - the log splits. Just avoid trying to do the impossible going accross the grain or at a branch intersection - this tool does not cut - it splits!!
And, with nothing to break it will last forever!

Awesome piece of equipment!
5 Dec 2008
By davsta , Devon
"This is truly an awesome piece of equipment, an absolute must for anyone splitting logs for a wood-burner. It does exactly what it says on the tin. My six year old is able to split hard wood logs with it using just a block hammer. My only caveat is that the logs need to be seasoned hardwood, it doesn't work well with knotty softwood."

Top log splitter
3 Dec 2008
By Shack , Sheffield
"This splits logs really easily, just tap it into the log with a sledge hammer and one swing does the trick. I have used it on logs up to 400mm long (16") with no problems. The only time I had trouble was when I drove it into a knot which is to be expected."

Top splitter
7 Oct 2008
By Cheshirelumberjack , Cheshire
"This is undoubtedly the best log splitter I have ever used. Hitherto all the log splitters that I have ever seen or used have been uniformly conical. The irregular shape of this log splitter makes it far more effective. Providing the logs are dry (which is true for logsplitters of whatever make shape or size), then it cut through some fairly chunky logs in just one hefty blow of a sledgehammer - very good and also excellent value."

Log Goes Boom!
3 Sep 2008
By WoodCutterPete , Cheshire
"Certainly lives up to its name, most logs split with a couple of blows of the sledge hammer. Had trouble with very wet logs and Y shaped logs but on the whole an excellent product. Much cheaper than an electric splitter and gives you a work out also."

Great bit of kit
30 Aug 2008
By Logman , Manchester
"Used it for the first time on 30/08/08, does what it says in the catalogue. splendid for splitting logs. Far easier and quicker than wedges & axes. Like most things I think there's a bit of a knack to positioning the grenade to get a good even split. I wouldn't recomend using it on newly felled softwood like conifers, the timber will be full of sap. The wood needs to dry(season) for a month or two before the grenade will work properly."

Handy to have
28 Feb 2009
By Engineer1 , Wales
"I'd agree with the earlier comments that you need more than one if you're splitting anything of size, or green wood (I bought 2). I get a cleaner split from using a woodsman's axe and maul hammer combination, but this is very useful as an additional tool when the wood is gnarly or too big for the electric woodsplitter."

Tough, but not that tough
13 Jan 2009
By SBLOKE , DEVIZES
"I bought four of these and I've worked them all hard. As has previously been mentioned, they work best on seasoned wood. Keep close to the edge of large diameter logs and you'll have no problems splitting them. Effective tool. If they came in tins, they do what would be said on it.

You need at least two in case one gets stuck. They're not indestructable though, only two of my four remain as I've broken tips on the others.

disappointing
24 Aug 2008
By si57 , pembs
"used this in windblown conifer logs- which have loads of varying grain and densities. but this did not split it just dug in and in and in- but refused to split anything. it may be more effective in hard more brittle timber"
