OK, they are cheap... and they are nicely machined... but they are simply too soft for use on mild steel. It may be that I got a duff batch, but after I had (lightly) punched just half a dozen centres with the 5/32" punch the point had mushroomed sufficiently that I had to re-grind it.
If you're working aluminium or other soft stuff, or you have the facilities to heat treat to harden and temper, these could be OK - but otherwise I'd advise paying more to get a better tool."
"As the previous reviewer has mentioned these are way too soft to be useful. Really you only need to use a centre punch when working on hard metals that a drill bit won't sink straight into, which makes these absolutely useless. I used the middle sized one of the set, and after one hit with a hammer (not very hard I might add) the tip was flat. I tried again with the largest one of the set thinking that this might be tougher, and the same thing happened - flat. i will be returning these as faulty. They look the part, but that's about it."
