Extremely good drills
10 Aug 2012
By Pike

"These drills are very good - although I've only just started using the set I have just bought, I've used a collegue's set of the same for some time before. The self centring tips on the drills are very useful, eliminating the need for centre punching in most cases.
The drills themselves are of brilliant quality, and are very sharp - they cut well even in the hardest steel. As far as I can tell, these bits should last a long time before needing sharpening (which unfortunately will remove the unique tip of the drill point) and to prolong their life I use a cutting oil to cool the drills when in use.
Overall, I think these drill bits are well worth the cost - they should last a long time, and offer impressive performance!"

Advanced design, work well
17 Aug 2011

"Used these to drill out some seized bolts from a metal frame using a Ryobi 1100W mains drill; on the first try the 13mm bit (with a little Ruko cutting paste) made mincemeat of an M12 hardened steel bolt and nut (welded in), without using a centre punch or a pilot hole - the starter tip on the bigger bits is revolutionary. On the second bolt the 13mm bit failed and snapped off its tip, but a selection of the other bits finished the job off quickly and efficiently. I emailed Screwfix and they shipped me a replacement set next day; based on the performance of the smaller bits I think that the 13mm I broke was just a minor slip up by DeWalt's QC/QA department.
Needless to say, these bits go through timber like they're made of cheese. The shank flats on the bigger bits really help to prevent slipping when drilling deep holes and the bits will chew through most things you throw at them - especially with the cutting paste.
Minor gripe - the case doesn't grip the bits like some of the Erbauer and Makita sets I've owned before, so if the case gets turned upside down when it's open the bits fall out. However, I keep the case closed as much as possible to prevent unauthorised borrowing by people who bought cheaper bits!"

"these drill bits are amazing. definately the best drill bits i have bought in a long time. have had them over a year now and haven't had to sharpen them once. they will drill through anything. they even went through a RSJ. well worth 57 quid as they will last a long time."

Superb product
9 Dec 2009

"First off yes these are VERY expensive. Ok really, really expensive. However they are absolutely superb. Incorporate a couple of great features. Most bits have a short, small diameter 'starter' bit which really helps with centring when starting. Larger bits (over about 4mm from memory) have three flats machined on the shaft which really stops slipping in most chucks.
Combined with a Makita 18v LiOn drill these make mince meat of most applications

World's most expensive bits
7 Nov 2012

"I've mainly use these on mild steel and hardwood in combination with a Makita BHP451 18v combi-drill. Lovely bits. Unlike the punches I just reviewed, these do actually go through soft cheese, and soft wood, and hard wood, and mild steel. I haven't tried them on diamond yet, but you almost get the impression that they'd probably give a good attempt on that too.
If anything has to be the let-down, it would be the plastic box. Yes it's solid (very solid), but you need to shake the box downwards before opening, to stop the bits falling out, which feels so 1970s for that is otherwise a top-of-the-range premium product. The one refinement would be slightly rubberised holes to retain the bits without allowing sliding. If I find a more 'grippy' holding box I'll probably transplant the drill bits. The clip on the box itself is also very tight (too tight), but is single-acting, rather than double-acting and best levered opened with a screwdriver to save stubbing your fingers each time.
Full product code (not given in the description above) is DeWalt DT7926-XJ 476640-01.
nb. I had the 12 mm bit snap on the first outing with what looked like a moulding issue in the stem. Dewalt emailed me a replacement 12 mm bit in the post a few days later."
