Superb tool
19 Jan 2014
By Logchopper
, Bristol
"I wish I had bought this a couple of years ago. I've been struggling to split logs using a log grenade and hand axe, so it has always been a job I hated. This makes it so simple and quite frankly enjoyable. It is such a pleasure to see a log cleave in two in one go. Highly recommended!"

Forged in Mordor
17 Dec 2013
By visualjazz

"Forged in Mordor. Orc approved.
Despatches hobbits in a trice - oh and logs.
Brilliant bit of kit - thoroughly recommend
it.
Cons: This is one heavy beast - not for bad backs.
Ridiculously inadequate rubber blade
protector.
Otherwise does the job brilliantly."

"been chopping logs for the last two years with chisels. wood axe's though that what you did struggle. This weekend had a huge pine tree to fell and split. spent two hours again struggling. I thought no way this will take for ever. Stopped work thought there must be a better way.
found this read the reviews. WOW its the biz i had 12 inch width logs about 15 inch high one smash with this destroys the log. splits it perfect it saves so much time. it weighs 8lbs and after 3 hours its hard to lift but this really does what its says on the tin 10/10. get one and feel the power

Forge Steel Fibreglass Handle
8 Mar 2011
By Shipwreck
, MEDWAY
"Cracking tool. 8lb is possibly a bit heavy if you are not of reasonable fitness but by god does it do the job. Even on wood over 12" thick and over 12" across a few good blows has it quartered, not just split but quartered. turn it round and it gives a good heavy thump into a splitter. For what I save on buying split logs this has paid for itself in less than a load.
Just be sure you can lift and swing it repeatedly."

brilliant piece of gear
18 Dec 2010
By marrut

"Ordered this maul a couple weeks ago, despatch & delivery very quick, top marks. Chopped logs 24 to 40 inch diam no probs. Don't know why Klam had probs. Don't know what we'd do without ours or how we managed before. We did reccommend it to a friend who has bought it at the new price of £14. (sods law or wot) still even at £20 that we paid it is half the
price on the highstreet, which is extremely good value.

log splitter par excellence
24 Aug 2008
By si57

"this really is a terrific tool for log splitting- i am processing spruce logs at 0.5 m with diameters up to 50 cm. but it splits well and avoids getting stuck in or bouncing off curvy grain.
if you do have logs to split this is the tool.
any over its have produced no visible damage to the handle- very helpful for training drafted sons"

Good, Roughneck is better
29 Mar 2009
By BashOn
, Linlithgow
"I own both this maul and the Roughneck 8lb maul .
I quite like this maul, although I prefer the Roughneck.
This maul seems to have a longer head, with a thinner wedge shape to it. It tends to turn more readily when hitting the log, leading to less control and a bit more wear on the wrists. I find the balance of the roughneck a lot better, the weight in the head seems to sit closer to the edge which I think gives better control and is therefore safer. Still, this maul will split logs quite happily.
When splitting logs, I find I reach for the Roughneck first every time. Now that its shaft is loose, I'll buy another when I've got a bit of loose change.
PS don't worry about the sharpness too much, my roughneck is much more dull, but I still prefer it to the freshly ground Forged Steel maul."

Avoid using in cold weather
10 Nov 2013
By RusticCharmer
, Isle of Wight
"Heavy-weight splitting maul that is fine once it is sharpened up with a grinder. The hammer face seems to be heat treated just right so that it can be safely struck with a sledgehammer without shattering. I've used this for about three years now, and it has taken some rough treatment and mishits without problems until... last winter the head worked loose from the fiberglass shaft. Seems the resin used to bond it becomes brittle in sub-zero temperatures."

no edge
7 Nov 2010
By Klam
, Hampshire
"very disappointed with this log splitting maul. It has virtually no edge to it, the base casting has been lightly ground on one side only. It can split only the lightest small logs in one swing, anything bigger and it just jams in and you have make a couple more swings with the added weight of the log jammed on the end. I'll go back to my old wedges and a sledge hammer"

worst maul ever
13 Mar 2012
By scammellman
, reading
"just got one this after breaking my cheep silver line one. 2 swings at first log which the silver line would have split in one stroke, this one just bounced off. Total rubbish, going back tomorrow.
Blade edge isn't even pretending to be sharp, in fact it's 1/8 inch flat. angle on blade is too flat so there is no chance of it cutting into the wood and approximation for a cutting edge is off centre line so almost impossible to grind. Suspect from description that this is a case hardened blade, so grinding wouldn't be a good idea anyway. Going to try the roughneck which gets a much better write up, is cheeper and rough neck do make very good pry bars etc that have razor sharp edges
"
