Good Value Chainsaw

"Bought on an offer @ £99 just before christmas, I have a woodburning stove and just needed something cheap to chop wood. I have had a Mountfield mower for 11 years and have to say have not been dissapointed with this purchase. Ran for over 3 hours non stop last saturday, never missed a beat. Other reviews talk of difficulty whilst starting, no such problems just followed the instructions. Very pleased so far."

"I bought the chain saw without seeing the reviews and was slightly worried when I read them, I shouldn't have been. After assembling the saw I pulled the choke out and it fired the second time round. I then pushed the choke in pulled the starter rope a couple of times before the saw burst into life.
I then set to sawing some logs from trees that I had felled ready for our wood burner. The saw behaved itself impeccably slicing through everything I threw at it.
I would highly recommend this product. I found it easy to use and well balanced; the engine responded quickly to everything I needed it to do. I have now used the saw for several days and every time it has started without a problem.

"A great value chainsaw.
Sometimes a bit difficult to start but once going it gets the job done.
If it doesn't start don't keep pulling the cord it only floods the engine, leave it for 20mins then try again.
Remember that you need to mix 2 stroke oil with the petrol and that you need to fill up the oil reservoir with bar oil (a special oil to lubricate the chain)
Overall a great product and if you need to cut down a few trees etc in your garden then get one after all its 2013 and nobody uses hand saws these days except the jam rolls"

Can't complain
06-Apr-2013
By

"I have used this saw a few times now so I think I can give it a fair review... If you follow the starting instructions, it starts well. It runs well but it sometimes seems to lose power a bit but clears soon enough and it is possibly a little under powered. The blade and chain is good. The kick-back bar works well. The balance is very good. The engineering may be a little suspect so I don't expect it to last forever. I paid £130 but it is £100 at the moment so you just can't complain. For the money it is a good purchase."

"After watching video and reading instruction book the saw started on second pull. I cut a number of logs then stopped engine while I cleared up and got more logs to cut. The saw started on first pull. I am very pleased with it."

"The price of £99.99 tempted me. Other reviews were not very complementary. I only wanted a spare saw so £100 was not too bad.
It went together ok and started 1st time. It does start in a different way to other engines, so be carefull.. So far so good.........

Not the best value

"Intended to buy the Ryobi chainsaw but the branch were out of stock and needed one asap so bought this one. In hindsight I could have bought this model or the same design under a different branding much much cheaper elsewhere. The machine is compact enough and handles well. It cuts OK but its not the best, would expect better at £200. Oil leaks no matter which way up it is stored. Was a nightmare to start up first time. I think the choke lever is not working properly so don't use it anymore and can manage to get it started most times."

It's a non-starter

"I bought this to trim down some roots and branches from a tree in the garden (I had been doing it with an axe, but got this to make the job quicker). I spent almost all of my time getting it to start up. At first it took a little time to start and got going and was OK, but then had to tighten chain. After doing this it was a total pig and did not start despite lots of attempts, checking spark plug, making sure not flooded, checking all fittings etc. I took it back and Screwfix were great and exchanged it but the second one was just as bad. For something with an RRP of £200 (was a good price at £130 at Screwfix though) this is a big let down. I could have done the whole job with an axe in the time I have been attempting to coax this into life. I will try to return this second one to screwfix for a refund or credit note this week."

Disappointed

, MAIDSTONE
"Overall the machine seems well built and suitable for home use. However, the instruction sheet was poor, and some DIYers might find the assembly difficult. The key problem was that I never did get it to start. Even drained out the fuel and replaced with new. I know lots of tricks to get engines going - in fact never had a failure before! Never fired once, which was frustrating. Took it back to Screwfix as it seemed to be an electrical issue whilst under compression, and I did not want to invalidate the warranty. Screwfix - brilliant as usual and refund given."

Avoid - this will annoy you!
10-Aug-2013

"There's a reason why this chainsaw is cheaper than the other petrol chainsaws here on Screwfix - it's rubbish.
I bought this originally in April when it was on offer at £99.
It worked for a little while, then the on/off button jammed so I had to call Screwfix to get them to pick it up and replace it. But before it jammed, I found that for every 20 minutes of actual sawing, I would spend about 40 minutes trying to get it started again and run properly. Yes I know how to start it, and I even re-watched the helpful Screwfix video associated with this chainsaw which shows you exactly how to treat the choke etc when you start it, but still I found that I spent much longer trying to get it work than actually sawing.
The same is true of the replacement. Initially it started no problem and worked for about 20 minutes, then whenever I pressed the throttle trigger it conked out. Then it won't start. It's incredibly annoying, you set out to do a job but you can't do it because the product is no good.
I need a reliable chainsaw which allows me to use it without spending hours getting it to work properly so this one's going back to Screwfix tomorrow and I'm going to buy one of the more expensive models, not Mountfield.
I'm a bit annoyed as I've wasted a few hours on these two so far, not to mention chainsaw oil, engine oil, and petrol.
In my experience - AVOID, there's a reason it's this cheap."

"i knew the reviews about this chainsaw were hit and miss but for the price i thought i'd give it ago. unpacked it, put it together as per instructions and(helpful screwfix video on youtube), started it "no problems with starting" started using it and thats where it all went wrong. really underpowered it struggled on 6' logs chain kept stopping" yes it was on right way round and adjusted correctly" switched off for a couple of minutes and couldnt get it going again, the chain had gone tight , couldnt re adjust it at all. after 20 minutes of trying to restart it, finally got it going and it had no chain drive what so ever, i checked it was seating on the drive cam/teeth but nothing. double checked the brake was off but nothing but noise so back it went no problems with refund."

"oh dear, oh dearI I have just learnt a valuable lesson. Read more than the first 3 reviews posted. This is an absolute piece of rubbish,Trying to get this thing started you need to be Popeye, 20-30 pulls no go! The thing just will not start easily even when warm.Make sure you have a glove on when pulling. their is a nasty rough indent beside the pull cord, When it got going it did the job ok. I am a carpenter who only wanted it for rip outs and a bit of home logging. Save your money and buy a different saw it is definetly not fit for purpose. Very dissapointed."

"This is/was the worst buy from Screwfix yet. Everything else has been great but this was awful. It would not start, the pull handle has broken and it has had to visit my local service agent and even he had trouble with it. When I actually got it started, it did the job but would not re-start. Any ideas how I can get rid of it?"

"Bought this item for cutting small logs for firewood but the lubrication system would not work, no oil coming thro'.
Tried Screwfix's own brand of oil as recommended by the 'troubleshooting guide but made no difference.
Returned to Screwfix and all good to them ... they exchanged it no problem with a different model as this one was out of stock.
Picking the new one up today bit if these reviews are anything to go by, I can see myself returning the new one :( ...not very good reviews are written"

NOT SO GOOD
28-Mar-2012
By

"Bought one of these saws for cutting firewood.Worked fine for 4 weeks then developed horrible sound and vibration for about 2 seconds before it died never to start again (all locked solid would not even turn over). The guys at screwfix as always replaced it no problem. Again about a month later exact same thing happened terminal death rattle followed by complete lock up within 2 or 3 seconds (by the way before anyone asks I do understand 2 stroke engines, fuel mixtures, chain lube etc... ). So off to see the exellent helpful staff at screwfix Yate branch who refunded my money in full.
