"I do a lot of woodworking and I love to use hand tools where I can and this plane was a very good buy.
Irwin is a good brand for saws and saw blades at the best of times but the Irwin / Record planes are of a very good quality in terms of overall build and quality of materials used but also in the steel used for the plane iron which is of high quality unlike some of the cheaper planes.
Every plane no matter what price will all need a little tuning when first purchased such as taking the time to sharpen the blade properly and generally setting it up properly but this plane didn't need much tuning and for the average diy'er it should be good to go for most people out of the box.
Even though it's a fairly heavy plane I used it comfortably for a hour or more on oak and maple (both hardwoods) and it made a excellent job on both as well as pine. The finish it leaves is really very good but this of course depends on how well it's been sharpened too.
If you only need one hand plane I would highly recommend this one as a happy medium as it's good enough for rough work but also does a pretty good job as smoothing too.
I like to spray a little wd40 every couple of months or so on my planes just to keep rust at bay in a cold, damp(ish) shed and as long as you look after this plane it will easily last several lifetimes I actually have some old Record planes and vises that are well over 50 years old and they work like new."
"Started using this today after buying a couple of weeks back. That's when I discovered that the blade end of the iron isn't straight. One edge is roughly a mm higher than the other. I've tried running it over a sharpening stone to level it, but have made little impact. Disappointed. Need to discuss with my local store."
