CFL lamps

"I've fitted about 30 of these lamps throughout my house and use them on every install I complete for my customers.
The light does take a while to reach it's maximum output, it is a whiter light (which I prefer) some of these lamps expire prematurely after a few hours and no where near the 8000 hours (which is 333.33 days of continuous use) However, everytime I've had one go I phone Screwfix and they have replaced it. They want the old unit back, I assume for research or to check that your not telling porkies!
They run cooler and cheaper than a standard bulb. If you think they are expensive then by a 'better known' brand for £25 each or change your lights. I've never purchased the 11w lamps though as they seem to long for a standard fire rated fitting and I can't be bothered with having to change it if it's no good. Perhaps Screwfix would like to send me some to try so I can complete a product suitability survey free of charge!"

"Bought one of these about 18 months ago when it was about £9. Yes it does take a while to warm up and yes it is a weird colour (nowhere near warm white more like a strong hint of blue [no not daylight]). You cant compare the light output of one of these with a standard halogen it just don’t work like that. As for one of your previous reviewers commenting on energy efficiency, the only real energy efficient light source I know does not tend to me around at night when needed. I must be lucky, as previously stated mine was bought about 18months ago and has been in my porch ever since (except for the two Christmas periods when replaced with a multi colour LED). It gets turned on at 5 every night when I get home (habit) and gets switched off at 7 every morning when I go out, and for two / three weeks each year its left on ALL the time while we are on holiday, YOU DO THE MATHS, its still going strong and we have adjusted to the strange colour. Would buy more if colour temperature could be guaranteed and you price reviewd."

Some Benefits

"Lighting is not exactly the same as the halogen units they are replacing and the light produced as a cooler cast than normal halogen.
In the area that they are to be fitted this will not be a problem.
Some slight delay in striking up, but normal for fluorescent tubes. They also need a short time to fully warm up and give out the maximum light.
The lamps were purchased to replace 8 x 35w downlighters in a kitchen diner.
A little more expensive to buy than the GU10 halogens, but should be a lot cheaper to run. Especially with the inflation in utility prices we are seeing at the moment.
2 of the lamps were physically damaged when I checked them in the car outside the trade counter. Always check before driving home. There should not be any rattles from the units. Staff were excellent and they were replaced immediately.

Bright light

"I purchased these to replace 1.2W LED GU10 lamps in the kitchen (although we have 14 lamps the light level was insufficient). Now we have a brightly lit kitchen. The light is daylight which means that there isn't a transition from day to night - the light level and colour remains the same. These lamps fit the GU10 fittings I have whilst previous low energy lamps I had tried were too big.
The downside is, as with all low energy bulbs, they take a little while to come-up-to-speed. In common with other reviewers I have found that the 8000 hours rating may be a little generous - I needed to replace one after a couple of months (less than 350 hours of use). I too would recommend over ordering so that you have a spare or two to hand."

Good but......

"Like others I too have found several of these lamps blown after only a couple of months, which at the price is not good for the savings I thought I'd be making.
The light they give off is excellent though although a couple of minuets is required to reach full brightness, I supplemented them in my kitchen with under cupboard halogen lights for some instant light.
I wonder if Screwfix monitor these reviews and will act to improve things"

Halolite GU10 7W for kitchen
30-Sep-2008
By
, Herts
"I decided to fit 8 of these to save energy in my new kitchen in standard bar type ceiling fittings. The light is very white (takes getting used to) and natural but may argue not bright enough. The light level is sufficient. Been using for about 3 months now and first casulty. Lamp became intermittent and then 'popped' inside - now dead. So only got less than 500hrs use for a 8000hr lamp. Not sure what comback one has - probably none.
One good thing about these lamps is they fit GU10 fittings without protruding - so very neat. The higher wattage lamps protrude looking unsightly. Guess will persevere as the enery saving compared with standard 50W GU10's is over 80%.

Good idea ... bad product

"These would be great - if they lasted longer than about 3 months. I replaced several standard halogen bulds with these (conveniently they're the same length as a normal GU10) and some bulbs were DOA, others stopped working after only a couple of months of light use (no pun intended!) - more like 80 hours life rather than 8000. Unfortunately for this reason I can't recommend them. If you do buy them, get at least one extra and keep taking the duds back."
