Solid, nice chain
27 Jan 2010
By johnd1

"It seems a heavy, strong item. It looks almost exactly the same as the Chubb doorchain, but the ERA has a nicer "curb" chain, and the slot in the door staple is also made more accurately so the chain can't slip or be pushed through. Very easy to use.
With this design of chain, the "door" part seems very unlikely to give way as the pull is across the four screws. However the pull is "outwards" on the screws in the frame, and there are only two of them
It is a much heavier item than the cheaper sliding type chain.
The alternative fittings provided for a PVC door are a nice touch."

Very good Device
5 Oct 2011

"This is a very good device and is better than many cheaper versions on the market, but there is a problem in respect of fitting to PVCu doors.
Fitting to wooden doors is very straight forward and gives good protection. However, when fitting to PVCu doors it would be advisable to check with the door manufacturer before attempting to fit. I believe many will advise that the 'jack nuts' are not used for two reasons:-
1. The size of hole required (4 in close proximity to each other, which may weaken the structure)
2. The Jack nuts may foul on the internal structure of the door style and therefore may not properly splay out when tightened.
If being fitted to PVCu doors without the jack nuts it would be advisable to use screws designed for use in PVCu.

ERA Timber/PVCu Door Chain
22 Nov 2009
By getascrewfix

"Initially thought this would be a mid or light weight chain but when it arrived was glad to see its actually very well made. The chain has thick links and the anchor points are made from nice heavy weight metal. Not really been using it long enough to test over a long period of time but it looks like if it came to it the door or wall would fail before the chain or anchor points."

Good Item
14 Oct 2012
By MarleyMiah

"Very solidly built item, but not recommended for upvc doors, unless you use specific upvc screws (as advised by another reviewer), you have to make huge holes, and youll find that at times the jack nut just wont grip the upvc tight enough (as the drilled holes required to fit the jack nuts are very big) and thus the screw and jack nut pops out. Then you've got a very big hole in your door/frame."

Fixings impossible to utilise
19 Aug 2011
By AgeConcern

"For fitting on a UPVC door, this is the most awkward thing I've encountered.
BIG holes must be drilled, so theres no going back!
The 'drop in sockets' must be tightened first (pre-set) and a bolt is used before adding the chain system.
Trouble is - it turns in the hole, there is no grip - instructions say to hold with pliers !!!
I used needle nose of course, you can get a tiny amount of purchase on the socket.
Well the fixing is circular (design fault) so its near impossible to do this and get the grip whilst the bolt issues counter rotational force.
End result it - only one out of 8 tightened up correctly, then its unremovable!
I had to use Fisher multi-purpose rawlplugs and araldite the collar into position, wait and hour, then did the replacement screws up, thus securing the thing.
Yes it works then, but honestly this thing would last 10 seconds against a thug kicking the door when ajar, its not that strong.
IF you want to install one - use drop in anchors and a pre-setting tool instead.
I bought one for future use and practiced on a waste piece of UPVC, that works.
As is - this is unsuitable for installation on a UPVC as it retails."

Not for UPVC doors at all.
14 Jan 2014
By partypest

"The chain etc is fine, the issue I have is that this is apparently for fixing to UPVC. As previous reviewers have said, the instructions call for 9.5mm holes to be drilled. That's quite large, so you really are taking a leap of faith with the manufacturer. DON'T! The supplied anchors fail because the material is too week for the thread to withstand the pulling strain required to set the anchors. Buy some other anchors, DO NOT USE THE ONES SUPPLIED. In which case, you can go and buy any old chain set and not waste time and money on this one."
