LAP LED Bulkhead PIR Lamp
9 May 2014
By
, Loughborough
"This replaced a 100W incandescent version very nicely. Pity there is no specification but can verify that the light output is about equivalent to 70W, although it is typically harsh LED. Consumption in standby is about 0.5W and running there are 12 x 0.5W LED's = 6W plus about 2W for the electronics and switching relay totalling about 8W.
There is 2 hole fixing which seems adequate. The PIR can be turned side to side and downwards. If the LED unit fails then the whole unit would need to be replaced.
It is too early to give a good reliability rating."

"Light sensor is just right triggered by relevant movement not by every cat. Sensor has some physical movement."

Fiddly, but good.

"Unlike some similar items, the first big plus is that this comes with clear instructions in plain English.
The only practical difficulty in setting it up is that the connection of the wires to the terminal block is VERY fiddly, as there is so little room in which to manipulate the wires. I found this impossible to do with the box already screwed to the wall (as per the instructions); it is better to attach the wires with the box unscrewed, THEN fix it to the wall. I would recommend you make sure you have plenty of daylight left to complete the job!
Once installed however, the adjustment of the light duration and the level of daylight at which it "kicks in" is very simple, and again clearly covered in the instructions.
The lamp itself is a set of non-replaceable LED's. There are therefore no bulbs to replace, but that means of course that when it DOES eventually wear out #hopefully after a few years#, the whole unit must be replaced.
The LED's are perfectly bright enough though.
I can't speak for its long-term reliability yet, but so far I'm very pleased with this choice."

Neat Job

"Surprisingly bright considering power consumption is 8 watts. Easy straightforward installation and set-up. The sensor head tilts which at first I was unaware of since it looks fixed in position. However once tilted downwards the light came on as required rather than whenever a car came past."

Very good but....

"We have not had the PIR light for very long so reliability cannot really be determined as yet.
Some points:
1. The PIR sensor is steerable to a degree both up and down and sideways
2. Take care getting the lamp lens off. It is held on by plastic lugs which could break off if they are over flexed. It is click-fit not screw on.
3. The chocblock connector inside can be completely removed to aid connecting to the mains input cable.
4. The sealing grommet for the cable entry can be fiddly to reseat after passing the cable through due to the recessed entry hole. The reseating of the grommet is probably best done from the back.
5. You will need long-nosed pliers to grip the heads of the mounting screws to place them in the mounting holes in the back panel as the holes are recesssed behind and to one side of the LED assembly.
6. The device is (I think) rated at IP44. The cover lens is not a complete seal to the main housing which is worth remembering if the unit is being placed under a leaking gutter...
7. As already mentioned by another reviewer, the light is LED harsh. However, there is sufficient of it for our application.
8. Keep the plastic housing from scrapping against any brickwork during installation. The housing does mark easily.
9. As the unit stuck-on label warns, and has been already said, if the LED unit does fail, it is complete replacement job.
